Just in time for spring... These bud vases are clear acrylic (except for the one resembling a cactus at the top of the page, it's glass) and look great pretty much anywhere.

Things are in the works for a possible panel discussion to take place here at the Idlewild home office sometime in the next month. The discussion will revolve mostly around simple things one can do to make their home or office more attractive and functional, but the the underlying theme is a much headier one.

With the US economy currently undergoing an "adjustment", Americans have shifted a bit in their spending habits and sensibilities. The topics we're to be discussing revolve around a broad yet subtle tendency towards more a classic aesthetic that I imagine will be creeping over the country in the year to come. Just as the "Paid off mortgage has replaced the new Mercedes as the status symbol of choice" (Talk of the Nation, Feb 5th) traditional themes and conventions will begin to overshadow the ultra modern orgiastic design concepts of the late 90's and early 2000's. That's not to say we will all be in the salon, sitting fireside in our Williamsburg reproduction wing-chairs and sipping port wine with our feet outstretched upon overstuffed and tassled ottomans. There will be a little taste of that in the months to come, though.

Get ready for some old conventions of "decent civilization" to come back. It's going to manifest itself everywhere from the the garden to the living room to the dining room table. I'm even thinking of getting a pre-1940's book of etiquette to bone up on my manners from a traditional standpoint.

Crown Jules.

We have an antique sideboard designed by none other than Jules Leleu, (June 17, 1883 –1961) and it is absolutely incredible. It's not easy to do this piece justice with photographs, however there are some pretty good ones in our Vintage and Modern Account.

Vintage and Modern, by the way, is a great resource for finding certain items like this online, but what makes it an especially great site is that it only acts as a directory for it's vendors. There's no V&M middle man one has to go through in order to get what you need, they put folks directly in contact with the dealers. That's good for us since we're all so personable here and enjoy answering questions about our wares.

If Damien Hirst were a vegan? (today's favorite new item)

We just got a few of these in and I think they are pretty charming in their simplicity. They are 3 inches thick and between 49 and 59 inches tall. The bases are sturdy and the wood has a nice thin varnish on it, rather than the gaudy candy coating of reflective gloss I had expected. The shapes are nice and organic (duh) and the color of the wood is a rich reddish brown. Wow. All it took was a tree stump, a saw and some varnish to blow me away this morning. Good show.
